Our Story
Patton Coffee Consulting, LLC.
Patton Coffee Consulting is the education arm of Chuck’s Roast. With this entity, we are offering the very best in coffee education with hands-on roasting classes using a commercial Geisen drum-roaster, specialty coffee tasting experiences, and small-group team-building events. Additionally, we offer coffee business consulting; if you have been in the coffee business for awhile and are looking to improve and grow, or if you have been an enthusiast ready to take the next step, we can help with affordable guidance from someone with years of experience in the coffee industry.
Small-Batch Coffee Roasting
We are small. Super small. But, hey, size doesn’t matter right? No, not when you have years of coffee roasting and sourcing experience.
As the founder of famed Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, Chuck has a long track record of sourcing and roasting some of the world’s best coffee. He has made well over 50 origin trips to over 15 coffee-growing countries, establishing business agreements with the world’s finest coffee producers. Chuck was a leader in the Direct Trade movement and was only the second coffee roaster in the country to publish a Transparency Report which highlighted BRCR’s buying practices and their commitment to farmer equity. He established long-lasting working relationships with coffee growers based on quality coffee, fairness, and collaboration. Many of these coffee growers continue to work with Bird Rock Coffee today.
During his stewardship of BRCR, the company won just about every national industry award possible including Micro Roaster of the Year 2012 and back-to-back Good Food Awards in 2015 and 2016. Chuck’s experience as a coffee taster and coffee buyer is truly impressive; he is the only person in the coffee industry whose coffee has placed in the TOP FIVE of Coffee Review’s Top Coffees of the Year list three times with TWO different companies: 2nd in 2014 (BRCR), 1st in 2016(BRCR) and 4th in 2024 (Chuck’s Roast). With quality coffee as its foundation, Chuck grew BRCR from a grass-roots operation based in his garage, to three retail locations in San Diego that served thousands of customers per day and provided coffee to many of San Diego’s top cafes. After selling Bird Rock Coffee in 2017, the company continued to grow and to thrive with more than ten locations now in San Diego. Bird Rock Coffee is known as a San Diego icon.
But Chuck’s Roast is about one thing and one thing only: amazing coffee, coffee that is interesting and unique. We are not just going for “Specialty Coffee” at Chuck’s Roast; we are shooting for something more elusive and rare and continuing the tradition of sourcing coffee that rises above the rest.
At the same time, we are not trying to be all things to everyone. Because of our size, we do not offer a wide-range of coffees and, frankly, we may not be the best fit for every coffee drinker out there. Sometimes, you might only find one coffee on our offering sheet while other times you might find four or five. Our offering sheet depends solely on the quality of the coffee we find. If we don't find much of it, we won’t offer much.
Nor do we offer a wide-range of roast degrees at Chuck’s Roast. In general, we are buying green coffee that shines at a lighter roast — City/City +. If we source a wonderfully funky coffee from Sumatra we might take that a tad further in the roaster but if you are looking for a French Roast you wont find it here. And, don’t do blends — no point in doing em of your single origins are spectacular. There may be a point in our future when a couple of our sublime single-origin coffees might work harmoniously together as an espresso but the company is not set up to offer many — if any—blends at this time.
We believe in seasonality and we believe in the work that is happening at the farms where the coffee we are roasting is grown and processed. Our job is to not screw it up, let the coffee shine, and give you a memorable coffee drinking experience.
